(BEIJING, August 11) — Giulia Quintavalle of Italy won gold in the Judo Women’s -57kg weight class in her Olympic debut by defeating Deborah Gravenstijn from the Netherlands with a yuko, and Azerbaijan’s Elnur Mammadli needed just 13 seconds to defeat Wang Ki-chun from the Republic of Korea with an ippon in the Men’s -73kg to claim the first gold for his country on day three of the Judo competition at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium on August 11.

Men’s -73kg

World No.1 Elnur Mammadli won the first gold medal for Azerbaijan in the Olympic Games by defeating Wang Ki-chun from the Republic of Korea. Mammadli needed just 13 seconds to claim the victory with an ippon. He was the European champion in 2006 and the second-place finisher at the World Championships in 2007. The 19-year-old Wang, the silver medalist, had impressed the world with a victory over 2004 Athens champion Lee Won-hee at the 2007 World Championships.

“I’m Olympic Champion. I’m bowing deeply in front of the people of Azerbaijan,” said Mammadli after winning the gold medal.

The two bronze medals went to Tajikistan’s Rasul Boqiev and Leandro Guilheiro of Brazil. Boqiev won the first bronze medal by defeating Dirk van Tichelt of Belgium with a yuko and a koka. This is Tajikistan’s first medal of the Beijing Games. Guilheiro just needed 23 seconds with an ippon to win the other bronze medal after beating Malomat Ali of Iran.

Women’s -57kg

With a yuko, Italy’s Giulia Quintavalle beat the Netherlands’ Deborah Gravenstijn, the bronze medalist of Athens 2004, to claim the gold medal in her Olympic debut. She finished fifth at both the 2007 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro and the 2008 European Championships in Lisbon in the -57 kg division. Last year, she also competed at the Good Luck Beijing Judo Open event and placed fifth in the -63kg weight class. Gravenstijn, the silver medalist, finished third in Athens four years ago.

“I was really tactful, but I believed from the beginning that it was possible to win the gold,” said Quintavalle about her performance. “Each Olympic medal is great. This is a success of the whole team.”

In the first bronze medal match, Ketleyn Quadros of Brazil beat Maria Pekli of Australia with an ippon. China’s Xu Yan, competing in the Olympics for the first time, threw France’s Barbara Harel for an ippon to win the second bronze medal. Xu was the silver medalist at the 2007 Asian Championships and 2008 Super World Cup in Paris.
