(BEIJING, August 11) — Despite missing four targets in the final, Satu Makela-Nummela of Finland did enough to win a gold medal in the Women’s Trap in Beijing on August 11. Makela-Nummela finished with a final score of 91.

Makela-Nummela started strongly in the final to hit her first 11 targets. Her major opponent was Slovakia’s Zuzana Stefecekova, who was tied in first place with Makela-Nummela after the qualification round on 70 points and missed three targets in her first 11 shots and fell behind Makela-Nummela in the opening stages of the final.

Though Makela-Nummela missed four of her last 14 targets, Stefecekova missed three targets herself and lost the opportunity to win the gold medal. Stefecekova finally finished with a silver medal after hitting a total of 89 targets.

The other four shooters in the final were tied on 86 hits, so a four-way shoot-off was held. The United States’ Corey Cogdell won the bronze medal after being the only shooter to hit the target on her first shot in the shoot-off.

Russians Julia Pakhalina and Anastasia Pozdnyakova finished second, while Ditte Kotzian and Heike Fischer of Germany finished third.

China was tied for first with Russia and the United States after the first dive, with a score of 52.80, then pulled ahead with three 10s on their second dive and never looked back. Their lead over Russia after an 81.90-point fourth dive was 17.37, making gold all but certain, and a score of 75.60 on the final dive sealed the deal.

Individual Women’s 3m Springboard begins on August 15 and concludes August 17.

(BEIJING, August 10) — China’s Guo Wenjun won the gold medal in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol in Beijing on August 10. Guo, 24, was outstanding in the final, shooting a score of 102.3 which took her total score to 492.3 – an Olympic record for the final score.

The silver medal was won by Natalia Paderina of Russia (489.1 points) and the bronze medal was won by Nino Salukvadze of Georgia (487.4 points).

To win the gold medal, World No. 1 Guo needed to beat Paderina, who shot an Olympic record 391 in the qualification round. The previous qualification Olympic record was 390, set by Russian Marina Logvinenko at Atlanta 1996.

However, Guo, who equaled the previous Olympic record with 390 in the qualification round, shot incredibly well in the final. Paderina gave her Chinese opponent a helping hand by shooting poorly on her second shot, scoring 8.5.

Eight of Guo’s ten shots were above 10 points, with the highest score, 10.8, coming on her ninth shot. Paderina’s performance flailed and she shot below 10 points on her last three shots.

Salukvadze comfortably won the bronze over Belarusian Viktoria Chaika, who shot a total of 482.0 points.

With 387 in the qualification round, Mongolia’s Munkzul Tsogbadrah had a great opportunity to win the bronze medal. However, the 27-year-old Mongolian’s game fell apart in the final with a series of poor shots.

Men’s 400m Individual Medley: Phelps smashes WR for Gold

(BEIJING, August 10) — Michael Phelps (USA) made a blistering start to his quest to win eight gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at the National Aquatics Center on Sunday when the 23-year-old smashed the world record in winning the Men’s 400m Individual Medley.

Phelps was the defending Olympic champion, world record holder and world champion going into the event, and had everything to lose with determined Hungarian Laszlo Cseh and Ryan Lochte (USA) chasing him home.

Phelps broke his own world record by a massive 1.41 seconds finishing in a time of 4min 03.84sec.

Phelps took the field out fast and was always well in front of world record pace. Cseh and Lochte were able to cut Phelps’ lead momentarily during the backstroke and breaststroke legs, but Phelps increased his advantage on the final freestyle leg.

The fastest qualifier from the heats, Phelps defended his Athens 2004 title in style in his first event of a busy program in Beijing. This comprehensive victory will send shivers through the rest of his competitors due to swim against him in the coming days.

Cseh swam a great last freestyle leg to win the silver medal in a European Record 4:06.16, relegating Lochte to the bronze medal in 4:08.09.

Lochte, the Silver medalist from the 2007 world championships, will be bitterly disappointed that he not only was unable to challenge Phelps but dropped to third behind the Hungarian.

It is the perfect start for Phelps, the man known as the ‘Baltimore Bullet’, as he aims for a perfect eight Gold medals to break Mark Spitz’s (USA) record of seven gold medals at a summer Olympic Games.
